CENSORSHIP AND ME

Protect our freedom of thought, inquiry and expression.

I am against censorship because in America, censorship is against our rights under the First Amendment. The Supreme Court has found that the First Amendment protects the right to receive information and ideas.

I am against censorship of literature because I believe it is about control and fear.

In the US, people write and publish ideas and messages to communicate to other people. I feel that censoring is a form
of control and is exercised by controlling certain ideas and messages, based on the specific beliefs of a person or a
group. This controls what information is communicated to society, as a whole or a targeted audience the writing was meant for, such as young adult literature, as is the case with author Judy Blume’s books.

I believe this control stems from fear. The individuals and groups that are behind censorship of literature in America have fears that they want spread throughout so they have control. Censors are afraid of things that are different then their own beliefs and things they remain ignorant about. Fear of anything that is different from how they live and think.

It’s sad that literary censorship is so frequent in today’s society. Because while it is an effort of some to make things “safe,” it really just removes value and depth from what writer’s want us to read.

MY PERSONAL OPINION ON THE CHALLENGING AND BANNING OF FOREVER BY JUDY BLUME....

I do not agree with ANY of the reasons given for
any of the times FOREVER has been challenged
    or banned.

I have two daughters that are now 21 and 23
years old but when they were about 11, I gave
them each a copy of Blume's book "Are You
There God It's Me Margaret" and included a
personal note about my feelings and experiences
    on many "girl" things.
